Monty joins Bullock and Reilly for visit to British Troops in Afghanistan

PGA captain Eddie Bullock and Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie helped give British troops a boost with a whistle stop tour of Afghanistan.   The PGA-organised trip was designed to show support for the efforts of soldiers in helping establish a new future for the war-ravaged country.

Former PGA captain Parnell Reilly from Huddersfield club Bradley Park also joined Bullock and Montgomerie as they delivered a series of golf clinics to soldiers and local school children and also brought along the famous Ryder Cup trophy.

Europe’s victorious 2010 captain took part in a Q&A during an army dinner with Montgomerie also hosting a special golfing masterclass with Bullock and Reilly delivering an insight into the great Scot’s swing.

Bullock, a director at Golf at Goodwood, said: “It was just sensational to see the troops and their reaction to us and Colin and the Ryder Cup and it was a wonderful opportunity to engage and connect with them.   “It was also a tremendous thrill to engage with Afghani youths and introduce them to golf.

“During the golf clinics with the soldiers we had everybody from plus one handicappers to beginners who were just there for the experience.

“I lost count of how many lessons we gave but it felt like thousands between the three of us.

“My father was in the RAF and I have always had a huge amount of respect and admiration for the forces and I came away with a smile in my heart after meeting the troops.

“This has been a trip I will never forget, the British troops are so professional, working seven days a week without hesitation and when you think of the sacrifice and effort they make on our behalf it is very humbling.”

During the three day trip, the trio travelled to Camp Bastion, the British military’s main base in Helmand Province.

At Kabul headquarters they met the Afghan president of the national Olympics committee, General Mohammad Aghbar and also spent time at the British Embassy, briefing ambassador, Sir William Patey, about the trip.

Montgomerie commented: “I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to represent the PGA along with Eddie Bullock and Parnell Reilly to come to Camp Bastion with the Ryder Cup and give a series of golf
master classes to the troops and to show them that we are thinking about them back home and appreciate the difficult job they are doing here to protect not just us but the rest of the world.

“We have had an enjoyable and informative time during our short visit. We have been impressed by the calm and professional way in which everyone seems to be going about their business. We have been made to feel most welcome by all in the camp.”

Reilly, who in 2010 took the Ryder Cup trophy on a helicopter tour of Welsh clubs, described the visit as life-changing.

“It was a humbling experience, it was just an honour to be invited to represent the PGA and go and see the troops,” he said.

“The whole camp was buzzing that the PGA had taken the effort to come out and see them. They all shook our hands it was just that little extra time that takes their minds off what they are doing out there.

“Many of the troops love their golf and they had created a special driving range on the Apache helicopter area and it was wonderful to see their passion for golf and to be able to give something back, especially with Colin and the Ryder Cup being there.

“To see what they do out there brings into perspective what dangers they face out there but equally impressive is the quiet, confident way they go about their work and we felt very safe in their hands.”
In addition several companies also lent their support to the three day trip with equipment and clothing donated by Tildenet, Huxley, Titleist, PING, Calloway, Golf Foundation and Glenmuir.

Review: Mark & Lewis Nelson At Parks Art Deco Cafe - 27th November

When someone is as passionate about their music as Mark and Lewis Nelson so obviously are, they pour their hearts and souls into their performance and the result is that feel-good factor that sets you up for the rest of the week.

Add to that the same dedication and passion for food, cooking, service and atmosphere that the Gallaghers provide at the Parks Art Deco Café in Blackpool’s Stanley Park and you have the perfect recipe for a real treat.

Mark and Lewis, who were joined in the second half of the afternoon by Marcus Nayor played acoustic guitar and sang at lunchtime on Sunday, 27th November 2011.

Their performance took me straight back to Strasbourg one winter in my youth, when two young buskers called Barry and Dave played guitar and harmonised the songs of Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Gordon Lightfoot and Leonard Cohen… Mark and Lewis Nelson also write their own material and it is important to encourage anyone who does that.

Numbers performed during the afternoon included a variety of genres and eras, including “Save Tonight”, “Sound of Silence”, “Father and Son” and one of Mark’s own compositions “Summer”. Lewis did a solo spot featuring an excellent version of “Nights in White Satin”, Mark also performed a rousing solo set, featuring “Brown-eyed Girl”, “The Boxer” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

Special guest Marcus Naylor put in a great performance, singing a couple of covers from Show Of Hands: "Cousin Jack" and "Crow On The Cradle" as well as Damien Rice's "Amie", before finishing with a highly emotive version of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars".

Background:
Edith Piaf has become synonymous with French Cabaret of the 1940s & 50s and remains France’s most popular singer. Piaf’s life was the stuff of legend, from her dramatic rise from Paris street urchin to star of international renown. Her life, however, was anything but ‘La vie en rose'. Towards the end of her life, ravaged by pain and injury, Piaf turned to drugs to find comfort and solace, never able to believe that she was indeed loved by countless thousands of fans the world over.

Snow White & The Seven Dwarves at Colne Muni - 6th to 22nd January 2012

PMA Productions returns to Colne for another year with a brand new version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The happy-ever-after fairytale - originally by the Brothers Grimm - is brought up-to-date with modern references, songs and jokes a plenty in this fun-filled, musical show for all the family.

Snow White, played by the talented Lauren Atkins, dreams of meeting a Prince to fall in love with and sweep her off her feet.

Like many fairytales, there are dark forces afoot and this story has an evil Wicked Queen played by Amy Skillman (seen recently on Britain's Got Talent and Channel 5's Don't Stop Believing) and her ever-willing assistant Ramsbottom - played by Chris Quinten, who many will remember as Coronation Street's Brian Tilsley.

After consulting her Magic Mirror, the vain Wicked Queen discovers that Snow White is the most beautiful girl in the land...and so she plots to do away with her, ordering Ramsbottom to do the deed!

Will he do it to Snow White, who is unaware of the Queen's hatred of her?

Will Snow White meet and marry a Prince?

Comedy genius Keith De'Winter returns as Dame Duddles with her sidekick son George Critchley as Muddles.

Along with a full supporting troupe of dancers from East Lancashire School of Dance and all the traditional ingredients of a fun-filled, family pantomime, this is sure to be a festive treat for any age.

Always wanted to know how to throw a clay pot on a potter's wheel? Get along to Ansdell Library on Saturday, 26th November 2011

Ansdell Library, who recently celebrated 21 years of lending books, etc. are currently hosting Craft Days.   For those who are not local, Ansdell is the little town in between Lytham and St. Annes on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire before you get to Blackpool.  Definitely worth a visit - there is a station if you don't want to take the car.   Turn left out of the station and go down the hill past the imposing Ansdell Institute to get to the library.

On Saturday, 26th November 2011, local Ceramic Artist Marie Kershaw, MA (who designed the beautiful 'Ophelia' statuette for the ACE Awards) will be demonstrating how to throw a pot on a potter's wheel.   Those who have a go may take advantage of Marie's special offer to take their work away, fettle and glaze it free of charge.  Marie will also be taking names of those who would like to attend her special workshops.

So why not have a go if you have never tried to make a pot before.  Learning a new skill is very good for the brain.

Review: Annie The Musical at Blackpool Grand Theatre

What better panacea for the ‘political turmoil’ we currently face with the Eurozone in meltdown and much of the world in revolt and, ironically, as quoted in the programme, similar to what was happening in 1930s America, than a musical show with the ‘feel-good factor’ and happy, positive songs?

“Annie”, originally written by Thomas Leihan, with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin, produced for this tour by Chris Moreno and starring Su Pollard and David McAlister, at The Grand Theatre in Blackpool until Saturday, 26th November 2011 is definitely that, with stunning performances from a superb cast.

Today’s performance to a packed house was a delight, proving the old show business adage about never performing with children and dogs as a young pupil from Blackpool’s Michael Hall Theatre School stole the show, along with Danny the dog who plays the part of Sandy the stray dog rescued by Annie.  Well done to all the other girls of the Orphanage who were also trained by the Michael Hall Theatre School and of course all credit to their teachers.

On the day the announcement that Su Pollard will join the line up for the Strictly come Dancing Christmas Special when the show ends its current run, Su gave a superb performance as Miss Hannigan who runs the orphanage, a role that she has made her own over the past decade or so of touring with the show. Dance Captain Caroline Andrew, who also plays several roles in the production, can be justifiably proud of the delightful dancing in this production. “Not bad for an old ‘un” says McAlister’s character Oliver Warbucks as he dances with Annie, neatly confirming a comment made in today’s “Daily Express” by Ann Widdicombe that ‘older people these days are not given the credit they deserve’.

Several other dancers in this production could be considered as possible contenders for Strictly (irony here because Arlene Phillips did the choreography for the film "Annie") – Ashley Knight, very light on his feet as Drake the Butler, Simone Craddock, as Grace Farrell - a very elegant PA to Mr Warbucks, and Kerry George in the role of Lilly St. Regis, to name but a few.

A live eight-piece band completed the cast and as always thanks should go not only to the young singers who share the title role but to everyone involved in the production - Producer, cast, musicans, sound engineers, lighting, costume designers (fantastic costumes), stage-set designers (brilliant - especially New York City scene and the snow falling during the Christmas Eve scene), back-room staff at the Grand Theatre, volunteers from Friends of the Grand and whoever produced the programme. Wonderful. A brilliant show - do go and see it!

Wigan Warrior Tomkins Selected By Barbarians RU Side

RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood believes the selection of Sam Tomkins by the rugby union Barbarians testifies to Rugby League’s proud track record of developing skilful, world class athletes.

Tomkins, the Wigan Warriors and England full-back, will play for the Barbarians against the Wallabies at Twickenham next Saturday, just a week after representing England against Australia in the final of 2011 Gillette Four Nations.

His selection was agreed between the Barbarians and his Super League club Wigan, with whom he signed an extended five-year contract earlier this month.

“I’m sure Sam will be successful on Saturday when he plays his first match in an unfamiliar code because he’s a hugely talented Rugby League player, one of many our sport is producing,” said Wood.

“Rugby League has an outstanding track record in developing its own players and is continuing to show union the way ahead. Sam’s inclusion in a sport he knows little about is proof of that

“You only have to look at how often union has turned to Rugby League players and coaches over the last 15 years to see the calibre of talent we have in our midst.

“It’s obvious to even the most casual of observers why union continues to covet Rugby League players whose sheer athleticism and outstanding skills with ball in hand make them extremely attractive to the other code of rugby.

“Sam’s selection underlines that imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery. Both Sam and Rugby League should feel flattered.”

Ice Hockey: Flyers Miss Out In Knife Edge Finish At Sheffield

English National League Division 2 North
 20th November 2011

Sheffield Senators 4 - Fylde Flyers 3
Period Scores: 1-3, 2-0, 1-0
Shots On Goal: 57 - 27
Flyers Scorers:  Veldze 2+0, Murphy 1+0, Caunce 0+2, Melbourne 0+1

Fylde Flyers ice hockey team failed to leapfrog their nearest rivals in English League Division 2 North on Sunday night as they finished on the wrong end of a hard fought seven goal thriller.

Team captain Wayne Whitby said: "We were short on players as only 12 were available for the game. We were ‎3-1 up and then Elvis (Veldze) and I got match penalties for fighting after someone took a pop at our goalie. We kept it to  3-3 then they got the winner minutes away from the end..."

Sheffield Senators are now 4 points head of 7th placed Flyers although the fledgling Fylde team have games in hand  over all the other teams in the division and will be able to start playing home games now that their Subzero rink in Cleveleys has been fitted with safety netting.

"George Harrison: Living in a Material World" - Review of Martin Scorsese's Documentary

I have always been a fan of The Beatles – Mum always said that Paul was her favourite.  I didn’t have favourite members of the Band – only favourite songs.
I seem to remember there was some sort of discussion as to who wrote the better lyrics – John or Paul – but I didn’t think it mattered too much.  After the Band split up and went their separate ways, I discovered Wings and loved them too.   John’s solo work was sometimes to my taste.

I liked the song “My Sweet Lord” without realizing who wrote it.  One day in the early 1990s I discovered an album called “Cloud Nine” by George Harrison and I was spellbound.  From the very first note to the last this album is truly amazing. And the line-up!   Guitars, keyboards: George Harrison; guitars, bass keyboards: Jeff Lynne;  guitar: Eric Clapton;  piano: Elton John; piano: Gary Wright;  drums: Ringo Starr;  drums: Jim Keltner; percussion and drums: Ray Cooper; baritone and tenor sax: Jim Horn; cello: Bobby Kok. I never get tired of listening to “Cloud Nine”.

Some weeks ago I read that Martin Scorsese had produced a documentary called “George Harrison: Living in the Material World”, presumably to coincide with the tenth anniversary of Harrison’s death.   I was pleased to discover that BBC Two was to screen the documentary over the weekend of 12th and 13th November 2011, so I watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it.  A big thank you to everyone involved in the making of the documentary.

The only thing I don’t understand is why no mention appeared to be made of “Cloud Nine” or of the songs on that album at the end of the documentary.  To my mind it is little wonder the Beatles were such a success with the combined talent of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison.

If you listen to the lyrics and music on “Cloud Nine”, from the first note of "Cloud Nine" to the final strains of "Got my mind set on you" you surely cannot help but discover the genius of George Harrison.

The Russian State Ballet Of Siberia At Blackpool Grand Theatre - 6th to 8th January 2012

Book now for the hotly anticipated annual new year visit of the Russian State Ballet of Siberia with full orchestra to Blackpool's Grand Theatre.

Friday 6th January 2012: La Fille Mal Gardée - 7.30pm
Frederick Ashton’s famous country comedy tells the tale of the love between Lise and Colas, and Lise’s efforts to thwart her overly possesive mother’s plan to marry her off to a rich, unattractive vineyard owner! Featuring comedy, drama and beautiful virtuoso dancing, these excerpts will give you a taste of the whole ballet, including the flute dance, Fanny Elsler pas de deux and the famous clog dance.

Saturday 7th January: The Nutcracker - 2.30pm and 7.30pm
In a magical production, this most famous of fantasy ballets begins as night falls on a traditional fireside scene on Christmas Eve. On the stroke of midnight we are transported to an enchanting world where nothing is as it seems, as toy dolls come to life and an army of soldiers does battle with a gang of mice and a Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince.

Sunday 8th January: Swan Lake - 2.30pm and 7.30pm
The greatest romantic ballet of all! This is an immortal love story filled with magic, emotion and beauty. From the opulence and splendor of the magnificent court room to the exhilarating lake scenes where swans play in perfect formation, Tchaikovsky’s hauntingly beautiful music creates a truly unforgettable experience.

Formed in 1981, The Russian State Ballet of Siberia has quickly established itself as one of Russia’s leading ballet companies and has built an international reputation for delivering performances of outstanding quality and unusual depth. The soloists and corps de ballet are superb, and never fail to delight audiences with their breathtaking physical ability and dazzling costumes.

Saskatchewan Rockers Support Troops CD

Canadian rock band Magic Trees - from Prince Albert in Saskatchewan - have been doing their bit to help bring some extra Christmas cheer to members of the armed forces who will be spending the festive period overseas as they have donated a song to a very special compilation CD.

"Hero 2011" has been produced by English good cases record label TTN Records and is aimed as a Christmas present to the troops and their families. The special limited edtion release is provided free of charge to Forces Support charities who then include them in Christmas parcels that are sent to Afghanistan and elsewhere and coipies are also provided to Forces broadcasting stations so that the songs can be enjoyed by all servicemen, support workers and their families.

Although it is not strictly a fund raising CD - Hero 2011 is NOT available for general sale - single copies are also provided to veterans asscociations and other good causes for them to auction off to raise funds at their own events.

Magic Trees spent the summer in Lytham St Annes in the north west of England working on their new album and met TTN Records' Paul & Lucy Breeze when they interviewed them for www.bestkeptsecrets.biz. When the Trees offered to donate a track from their debut album "Everything Is A Song", Paul immediately plumped for "My Night Sky" as the starry night sky is very evocative image and is often used by people who are far away to help them think about their loved ones back at home.

See "Annie" at Blackpool Grand Theatre - 22nd to 26th November

Annie opens at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre from Tuesday 22nd November starring Su Pollard as Miss Hannigan.

The timeless tale of little orphan Annie is back at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre from Tuesday 22nd November to Saturday 26th November starring Su Pollard as Miss Hannigan accompanied by a West End company of 40!

The story of Annie, a gutsy 11 year old orphan with a heart of gold, has become a family favourite all over the world since opening in 1976. It’s back to give a whole new generation the chance to experience this enchanting musical about never giving up hope – which was an important message of November’s National Adoption Week.

Since launching in 1997, National Adoption Week has gone from strength to strength, reaching people all across the UK wanting to know if they can adopt.

National Adoption Week is hugely important in reminding people about the difference adoption can make to a child’s life. It is a chance to transform a child’s life for ever, just like Daddy Warbucks does in Annie. Information on fostering and adoption from Blackpool Council will be available from the Grand Theatre during the show week.

Set in New York City during the Depression Annie lives at the Municipal Home for Girls under the ‘care’ of the cruel and crooked Miss Hannigan. Determined to find her real parents she is taken in one Christmas by billionaire Oliver Warbucks. Adventure after fun-filled adventure follows as Annie foils the plans of Miss Hannigan and her dastardly brother Rooster, who are plotting to get their hands on Warbucks’ money.

Winner of no less than 9 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and boasting one of musical theatre’s most memorable scores including It’s A Hard-Knock Life, Easy Street and the much loved, Tomorrow, Annie is a classic tale of rags to riches filled with visually stunning choreography and a laugh out loud script.

Don’t miss this heart-warming story of one little girl’s journey to find her family.

Annie is at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre from Tuesday 22nd to Saturday 26th November starring Su Pollard (Hi-de-Hi!)

Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm, Wednesday and Saturday matinées at 2.00pm.
Tickets from £12.50 with concessions available.
To book for any show you can call the Box Office on 01253 743339 or click on http://www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk/ , or visit  the Grand Theatre information sales point in the Houndshill Shopping Centre

Free Meal in Trafalgar Square, London for 5,000 people on Friday, 18th November 2011

Feeding Five Thousand (Feeding5k) is the brainchild of author Tristram Stuart and they have decided to lead the way in showing us all how to eliminate food waste. They are organising a massive free, hot lunch in Trafalgar Square London on Friday, 18th November 2011 from 12noon till 2p.m.  They will be using exclusively food that is still good but officially past it's 'sell-by date'.  Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, will be there so why not go along and see what it is all about.  This definitely sounds like an idea to copy all over the UK.   First come, first served.

It seems that in the mistaken belief that certain food items have gone bad, approximately £12 billion worth of food is thrown away every year in the UK.  What an awful thought.   In an effort to cut this waste, the 'best before' date ruling has been relaxed since 15th September and from now on only goods such as soft cheese, meat, fish, eggs and ready meals will carry a 'best before' date.  Other foods, such as tinned food, jams, pickles, snacks, etc. will be marked with a 'best before' date, after which they may not be at their best but will still be safe to eat.

Feeding5k is looking for volunteers to go and help prepare the food - so if you have some spare time why not volunteer.

For further information, please see www.feeding5k.org

Ice Hockey: Hull ENL Stingrays 6 - Fylde Flyers 3

English National League Div 2 North - 13th November 2011

Hull Stingrays 6 - Fylde Flyers 3
Period Scores  4-1, 1-2, 1-0
Shots On Goal: Hull 41 Fylde 47
Flyers Scorers:  Bobby Caunce 2, Andy Clark 1

Fylde Flyers outshot their hosts 47  to 41 on Humberside last night but a disastrous 1st period during which they conceded 4 goals left them with too much to claw back in the latter stages.

A depleted Fylde side missing Latvian Under 21 international Elvis Veldze who had pulled out through illness just before the game, Mark Gillingham, Ric Hulme and Matt Gibson - both of whom picked up injuries at Flintshore last weekend, Flyers were lifted by 2 goals from Bobby Caunce  and a third from Andy Clark but resolute Hull defending kept them goal-less in the 3rd period.

Afterwards, team captain Wayne Whitby said: "It was a decent performance for most of the game. a few silly mistakes here and there cost us but its coming together I think. We outshot them tonight so that's a step in the right direction."

Fylde Flyers travel to face Sheffield Senators on Sunday 20th November before a highly anticpated debut at their home rink against Lancashire raptors on Saturday 26th November.

Hero 2011 Showcase Show On Preston FM - 11th November @ 7pm

In view of the fact that our regular Showcase show falls on the 11th day of the 11th month of, in fact, the 11th year in this particular year, we have decided to take the opportunity to feature tracks from our Hero 2011 CD that has been produced as a Christmas present for the troops.

This CD is not for general sale so this is a rare chance for people to be able to hear all the artists who have been kind enough to contribute songs to the album in one go

How do we plan to fit 80 minutes of music in to a 60 minute show?  Well, we have decided to give prominence to artists who we have not featured in previous radio shows.

For example, we will be playing the full 5 minutes of  Bernulf's "Wreck Of The Rohilla", all of Grace O'Malley's "Bring Him Home" and the full length versions of great covers by Jim Marshall and Siobhan Palmer, while still playing edited clips from such artists as the Magic Trees, Outl4w, Bright Shapes and Ashley Benjamin - all of whom we already feature quite often.

So join us for a marathon journey of 22 songs in 60 minutes in our special "Showcase on Hero 2011" show on 103.2 Preston FM on Friday 11th November from 7pm.

You can tune in to Preston FM on 103.2FM in the local broadcast area or listen live via the internet at http://www.preston.fm/
