Review: Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap" UK Tour at Blackpool Grand Theatre

It is a real treat to be able to see the Mousetrap on it's first ever UK tour after 60 years continuous running in London's West End.

If you like murder mysteries and Agatha Christie stories, then you won't be disappointed.

It's a classic Christie plot: a country house cut off by snow, lots of strange guests and, of course, a murder to solve.

All the cast were fantastic but it was especially nice to see Karl Howman - who most people ill best remember for his "Jack-the-lad" characters on TV - playing the mysterious Mr Paravicini.

The Mousetrap runs at the Blackpool Grand Theatre until Saturday - do try and see it!
Monday 25 to Saturday 30 November Tickets: From £15.50, Concessions Available.
Call Box Office on 01253 74 33 39 or visit www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk

Ice Hockey: NIHL North Round Up For The Weekend Of 16th & 17th November 2013

After a fascinating weekend of ice hockey in both the Moralee (North 1) and Laidler (North 2) Conferences, things are even less clear cut than they were before!

Solway pulled ahead at the top of the Moralee Conference on Saturday night with a 6-4 win over Blackburn Hawks while Sheffield Spartans edged Sutton Sting 3-2 to move into 3rd place.  However, second bottom Sting then sensationally beat Solway 6-3 on Sunday night while Billingham stars came from behind to snatch a winner with 4 second to play in their North East derby with Whitley Warriors to climb back into second place.

In the other Moralee match on Sunday, Manchester Minotaurs won 13-3 away at bottom team Telford Titans.

In the Laidler Conference, Blackburn Eagles picked up their first points of the season with a 6-4 win over Widnes Wild on Saturday.

The big game on Sunday night saw Deeside Dragons fight back from 2-6 down to beat Coventry Blaze 7-6 and maintain their lead at the top of the table with other results meaning that Blaze dropped down to 4th..

Nottingham Lions' 4 point weekend with wins at Sheffield Senators (2-7) and at home against Hull Stingrays (5-2) moved them into 2nd place while Solihull Barons scored 23 goals in their two away wins - at Hull (1-10) and Widnes  (2-13) to leapfrog Blaze into 3rd.

Cheshire Dogs' Home, Warrington - Christmas Fair - Sunday, 1st December 2013 - 11 am - 4 pm

Local Football Round Up - 16th November 2013

AFC Blackpool slumped to a dispiriting 0-4 defeat at home to West Didsbury & Chorlton in the NWCFL Premier Division.  The game was actually closer than the result suggests and the home side felt aggrieved at some of the officiating.

AFC Blackpool are at home against next Saturday when they entertain Winsford in a league encounter.  Squires Gate FC are also at home- against Ashton Athletic.

In the Quarter Final of the Lancashire Shield, Blackpool Wren Rovers beat Garstang on penalties after drawing 1-1 after extra time.  Next Saturday Wren Rovers are at home to Coppull in the 1st Round of the Richardson Cup - 2pm kick off.

The Mousetrap - First Ever UK Tour Comes to Blackpool Grand Theatre 25th to 30th November 2013

For 60 years, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap has been the world’s longest running stage production. The first ever tour of the record-breaking production opened on 11 September 2012 in Canterbury and will be coming to the Grand Theatre Blackpool from Monday 25 to Saturday 30 November.
The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be?
One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed.
In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

Ice Hockey: NIHL North Round Up - Weekend of 9th &10th November

It was “all change” at the top of the NIHL North Moralee Conference this weekend as last season’s NIHL North 1 league champions Solway Sharks leapfrogged Billingham Stars into top spot.

Stars slumped to a shock 3-0 shut-out defeat at second bottom Sutton Sting on Sunday evening and the Sharks took full advantage by shutting out Sheffield Spartans 8-0 on Saturday night and then winning 7-5 away at third place Whitley Warriors on Sunday.

Solway now lead the Moralee Conference with 18 points from 10 games. Billingham have 14 points from 10 games and Whitley have 12 points from 9 games.

The Spartans bounced back from that Saturday night set back to beat bottom club Telford Titans 8-2 on Sunday to maintain their 4th place in the table.

In the weekend’s other league game, Blackburn Hawks drew 2-2  at home to Manchester Minotaurs, leaving the two rivals in 5th and 6th respectively.

Laidler Conference (N2) league leaders Deeside Dragons were held to a 2-2 draw at second bottom Sheffield Senators on Sunday, despite outshooting the opposition 33 to 17. This was quite an achievement for the Senator who had previously only picked up 3 points all season as they who led 1-0 at one point and kept the Dragons at bay until the 37th minute.

Widnes Wild moved up to 5th place in the table after a 2-2 draw with last season’s N2 champions Nottingham Lions.

In the division’s other game of the weekend , 4th place Solihull Barons beat 2nd place Coventry blaze 6-3 to lift themselves to the edge of the chasing pack.  They are 4 points behind 3rd place Lions and 5 behind Blaze but have 2 games in hand over both of them.  Deeside remain top with 19 points from 11 games.

News has just come in that Fleetwood Library would like to retain the exhibition until the end of this month as it has attracted quite a lot of attention.

Fleetwood Library

UK

As there are also Fleetwood Libraries elsewhere in the world, I think it wise to specify - there is one in Canada and one in the USA.

Entry is free and you can view the exhibition during normal library opening hours.

If you have never visited Fleetwood - where Wilfred Owen was posted in October - December 1916 before leaving for the Western Front - don't forget to visit:

The North Euston Hotel, which was the HQ of the Gunnery School

Fleetwood Golf Links - where the firing ranges were situated and

Wilfred Owen's lodgings in Bold Street, Fleetwood (blue plaque in situ)

Fleetwood Freeport is also worth a visit, as it is alongside the marina which is full of interesting yachts.

And Fleetwood has a park called Memorial Park - near Fleetwood Town FC - which has just received a grant for renovations.

Book Now for Classic Clapton - Eric Clapton Tribute at Colne Muni - 15th November 2013

CLASSIC CLAPTON the World's No1 Eric Clapton Tribute Band featuring front-man Mike Hall will be making a welcome return to Colne in November after a gap of eight and a half years.

They will be performing at The Muni Theatre, Albert Road, Colne on Friday 15th November at 8.30pm.  Doors open 7.30pm.  Tickets priced £10 advance (£12 on the door) are available from the box office - Tel: 01282 661234.  Visit the venue’s website:- www.themuni.co.uk  This will be the band’s second visit to Colne.  They performed a very successful concert here in 2005.  Fans are advised to book early for their next appearance.

They will perform all of EC's classic songs including Wonderful Tonight, Tears in Heaven, Crossroads, I Shot The Sheriff, Lay Down Sally, Cocaine and of course Layla!  There will even be an “UNPLUGGED” segment.

NEARLY 2 HOURS OF CLASSIC CLAPTON

The band was formed in 1985 in Newcastle upon Tyne long before the term “tribute band” was invented and named themselves ''After Midnight'' after Eric Clapton’s first solo hit.  Their ability to re-create Clapton’s electrifying stage performances, really caught the audience’s imagination.  In guitar/vocalist Mike Hall, the band possesses a front man who not only looks like Eric, he sings and plays guitar like him too!

In 1999, Mike won a national look-alike competition held at Madam Tussauds, London.  Mike has met Slowhand twice, and even received a message of encouragement from the guitar maestro (written on a Concorde menu).

TYNE TEES TELEVISION were so impressed, they made a programme about the band, called 'COVER THEIR TRACKS'.  It was shown in August 2000 and received rave reviews, leading to national recognition. Last year Mike was filmed by Japanese TV for a documentary about Slowhand's classic song Layla.  The programme was shown on BS Fuji TV Japan in January 2013.

In 2001 they embarked on an extensive tour of UK Theatres.  They called the tribute show "CLASSIC CLAPTON".  Since then, they have continued to perform throughout the UK and Europe including concerts at The Royal Festival Hall, London and a triumphant appearance at Glastonbury Festival in 2002.  In the past few years they have performed numerous concerts in Europe including Spain, Estonia and Holland.  In 2009 they appeared at St Andrews Auditorium in Mumbai.  A 10,000 mile round-trip for 1 gig, but it was a great experience.

In the past 28 years CLASSIC CLAPTON have become something of a rock institution.

CLASSIC CLAPTON comprises 4 excellent musicians:-  Mike Hall (lead vocals/guitar) & Paul Warren (keyboards/ backing vocals).  Since their last appearance in 2005 they have been re-joined by Danny Davison (drums) and Dave Robson (bass guitar /backing vocals).  Dave is a former member of chart band Geordie.  In fact he was with them at the time Brian Johnson left to join AC/DC.  Dave & Danny were both original members of CLASSIC CLAPTON.

CLASSIC CLAPTON have released three albums.  Firstly “THE MUSIC OF ERIC CLAPTON” contains brilliant cover-versions of 17 Clapton Classics.  Their second is a live double CD ''CLASSIC CLAPTON Unplugged''  recorded at Belfast Waterfront Hall.  In 2004 they released their third album “CLASSIC CREAM” – featuring 20 songs made famous by the sixties supergroup.  All three albums will be available at Colne.

Eric Clapton has been a major international star since the mid 1960's, when he revolutionised electric guitar playing, with his virtuoso performances in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.  He has won an incredible 19 Grammies and is the only triple inductee into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of The Yardbirds, Cream and as a solo artist).

Eric Clapton’s recent tours unfortunately have visited only a limited number of large UK arenas.  If fans want to hear all of his hits performed in more intimate surroundings, they really should attend a CLASSIC CLAPTON concert.  The whole of Clapton's illustrious career will be covered including Cream, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Blind Faith, Derek & The Dominos and the solo years.

For more information, see the web-site:-   www.classic-clapton.com

Ice Hockey: NIHL North Round Up - Weekend of 2nd/3rd November 2013

Blackburn Hawks returned to winning ways last night with a 16-1 win over the Moralee Conference’s bottom club Telford Titans (in photo). The Titans had a similar mauling on Saturday night when they lost 15-1 at home to last season’s league champions Solway Sharks.

That win moved Sharks level on point with league leaders Billingham Stars and the status quo was maintained after both teams won their games on Sunday evening, with Solway just edging a 4-3 win away at Sheffield Spartans and Billingham winning by the same scoreline at home to Sutton Sting.  Both teams now have 14 points but Billingham have played a game more.

In the other Moralee game of the weekend, Whitley Warriors beat Manchester Minotaurs 6-1 to maintain their 3 place in the league table.

In the Laidler Conference (North 2), Deeside Dragons maintained their position at the top of the table with a 4-2 win away at title challengers Nottingham Lions while Coventry Blaze took advantage to move clear in second place with their 7-1 win over Widnes Wild.

Solihull Barons 3-2 away at Sheffield Senators keeps them in 4th place – 8 points behind the league leaders but with 2 games in hand.

On Saturday evening, bottom club Blackburn Eagles almost picked up their first points of the campaign but were just edged out by Hull Stingrays in a 3-4 home defeat.
